The Start of the Kinetic Chain

The foot and ankle play an important role in standing, ambulation and function of the lower kinetic chain. The foot and ankle can affect function of the lumbar spine, hips, and knees. This course brings together the APTA’s Current Concepts of Orthopedic Physical Therapy along with an in-depth biomechanical approach to foot function allowing the participant to effectively treat not only pathophysiologic conditions of the foot and ankle but be able to perform a biomechanical evaluation to diagnose foot and ankle dysfunction in order to prescribe correct orthotics when needed.

Tendinopathies, plantar fasciapathy, stress injuries and bio-mechanical conditions are addressed. As with many physical therapy approaches, correct exercise dosage is key. The application of Current Concepts is used to improve patient outcomes along with the use of effective manual therapy.

The participant will upon completion be able to treat the foot and ankle as it applies to the rest of the lower Kinetic Chain, evaluate gait, foot biomechanics, treat tendinopathies effectively along with feeling confident prescribing foot orthosis in order to provide a comprehensive skill set for the management of foot and ankle problems.

Course Objectives:

The participant upon completion will be able to:

  1. Analyze gait patterns and their effect on the lower kinetic chain
  2. Evaluate the biomechanics of the foot and ankle
  3. Differentially diagnose conditions of the foot and ankle
  4. Prescribe correct dosage exercise
  5. Perform effective manual therapy to the foot and ankle to restore normal joint mobility
  6. Educate the patient’s ongoing management of their condition
  7. Perform dynamic foot assessment
  8. Prescribe corrective orthosis when need
