A Manual Therapy Approach to TMJ Evaluation and Treatment

 

In this 15 Hour course Frank Dieckman, PT presents Manual Physical Therapy

based evaluation and treatment strategies for the patient with temporomandibular

joint dysfunction. The Otolaryngologist community report that as many as 35% of

their patients present with signs and symptoms consistent with TMJD and Physical

Therapists are ideally situated to provide these patients with appropriate care. In this

course you will learn the anatomy, physiology and biomechanics associated with TMJ

dysfunction and the evidence based evaluation and treatment interventions that will

lead to successful outcomes. This is a lab/lecture course that will emphasize the

contributions of the PT/PTA team. Strategies for documentation, clinical productivity

and marketing will be included!

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

 

– Demonstrate an understanding of the anatomy and function of the temporomandibular joint and its relation to upper cervical spine mechanics

– Demonstrate an understanding of the correlation between cervical and thoracic spine dysfunction and temporomandibular joint dysfunction

– Demonstrate an understanding of the Manual Therapy Lesion as it relates to the TMJD patient population

– Be able to competently perform the Manual Physical Therapy interventions appropriate to treat the TMJD patient population

– Demonstrate an understanding of scientific exercise prescription for the TMJD patient population

– Demonstrate an understanding of how to incorporate the TMJD patient population into your current practice while maintaining clinical productivity within the framework of the PT/PTA team

– Demonstrate an understanding of the process for both internal and external marketing strategies to recruit patients with TMJD to your practice

– Be able to fully evaluate and appropriately treat the patient with TMJD

 

 

COURSE SCHEDULE – 1.75 days

 

DAY ONE

  • 7:30 am – Registration
  • 8:00 am – Introduction to Manual Physical Therapy for the PT/PTA team
  • 8:30 am – Basic Sciences: Histology/Neurophysiology
  • 9:15 am –  TMJ/Cervicothoracic Anatomy and Biomechanics
  • 10:30 am -Break
  • 10:45 am – The Manual Therapy Lesion and TMJD
  • Noon        – Lunch Break
  • 1:00 pm –  Evaluation: Flow of Procedures
  • 2:00 pm –  Evaluation: Lab TMJ/Upper Cervical Evaluation
  • 4:00 pm – End of Day

 

DAY TWO

  • 8:00 am –  Identifying Red Flags: Upper Cervical Instability
  • 9:00 am –  Upper Cervical Precautionary Tests: Lab
  • 10:30 am – Break
  • 10:45 am – TMJ/Cervicothoracic Joint/soft tissue techniques: Lab
  • 12:30        – Lunch Break
  • 1:30 pm   – Scientific Exercise Prescription for the TMJD patient: Lecture/Lab
  • 3:00 pm  – The Business of TMJD: Marketing/Documenting/Productivity
  • 3:30 pm  – Review/Questions/Close
  • 4:00pm  –  End of Course
