This basic level evidence based webinar will explain the functional anatomy of the pelvic floor and the role of the pelvic floor in bladder and bowel control, respiration, and balance. Physical therapist, occupational therapists, and physical therapist assistant participants will learn how to identify bladder control problems in their patients with orthopedic and neurologic diagnoses, and develop skills and strategies to perform basic rehabilitation interventions to treat urinary incontinence and other bladder control problems. This 2-hour free webinar will provide a practical introduction to starting a Pelvic Health and Wellness program in your clinic

  • Participants will be able to describe the functional anatomy of the pelvic floor and its role in bladder and bowel control, respiration, and lumbo-pelvic motor control.
  • Practical strategies for addressing many bladder control symptoms will be immediately applicable.
  • Participants will learn how to identify bladder control problems in patients with orthopedic and neurologic diagnoses, and to develop skills and strategies to perform basic interventions to treat urinary incontinence and other bladder control problems.
  • Details of next steps for development of a pelvic health and wellness program, will be discussed and explored.

Objectives: the participant will:

  • Describe the functional anatomy of the pelvic floor and lower urinary tract
  • Explain the role of the pelvic floor in bladder and bowel control, respiration, and lumbo-pelvic motor control.
  • Develop strategies for screening patients for pelvic floor dysfunctions and identify patients who may have pelvic floor muscle dysfunction
  • Demonstrate methods of specifically activating the pelvic floor muscles (PFM) during exercise to improve lumbo-pelvic motor control.
  • Perform basic interventions to improve bladder control.
  • Describe pelvic floor rehabilitation interventions and the process of referral to a physical therapist specializing in the treatment of pelvic floor dysfunction.
